English Language Arts
English Language Arts (ELA) consists of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. ELA is the basis of all that we do at BCS. Our goal is to help students become confident, effective communicators.
We provide students opportunities to share their excitement about books. We read to all of the students and provide exciting literature and nonfiction choices for independent reading. All students are also challenged to stretch their reading skills with guided reading, through which they learn reading strategies appropriate to their levels. In addition to independent and guided reading, we also work systematically with students on specific reading skills such as the sounds of letters and syllables.
All the grades have writing workshops every day. As the students grow at our school, they become more engaged in using the writing workshop model. This means that students gather ideas, write drafts, revise, edit, and publish pieces of writing.
Other ways we promote ELA is through our reading buddies program, which meets three days a week, a school-wide relax-and-read time, and through our school library.
